Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
• demonstrate in-depth specialist knowledge of techniques relevant to the discipline;
• demonstrate an advanced understanding of concepts, information and techniques informed by knowledge across, or in aspects at, the forefront of the discipline;
• exhibit competence in the exercise of generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities related to the discipline;
• demonstrate an advanced understanding of techniques applicable to research in the discipline;
• take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and developing professional relationships with others;
• proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and evaluate these; evaluate current issues and research in sustainability and environmental management research.

On completion of the final year students will have:
• a systematic understanding of the knowledge of the domains of Computer Science and Mathematics, with depth being achieved in particular areas, including both foundations and issues at the forefront of the discipline and/or professional practice in the discipline;
• a comprehensive understanding, and a critical awareness of: the essential principles and practices of the domains of Computer Science and Mathematics as well as current research and/or advanced scholarship;
• a comprehensive understanding of current standards, processes, principles of quality and the most appropriate software technologies to support the specialism; and an ability to apply these;
• consistently produced work which applies to and is informed by research and/or practice at the forefront of the developments in the domain; and demonstrates critical evaluation of aspects of the domain;
• understanding of the professional, legal, social and ethical framework within which they would have to operate as professionals in their area of study;
• the ability to apply the principles and practices of the particular programme's domain in tackling a significant domain related activity.

Transferable (key) skills

• a practical and working understanding of the discipline;
• the skills required to conduct multi-disciplinary research;
• the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in professional practice;
• ability to evaluate their own achievement and that of others;
• self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
• independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
• critical engagement in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

• demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
• drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
• the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
• evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within the discipline
• work that is typically both evaluative and creative.
