Learning outcomes
On completion of the programme students should have shown evidence of being able to:- demonstrate understanding of a range of statistical methods for the analysis of medical data;- embark on a programme of research as a research student;- undertake data analysis for a wide variety of medical data;- exercise key programming skills with a focus on data analysis using a range of software;- undertake career as a medical statistician;- explain statistical methods and results of statistical analysis in both written and verbal form, to both technical and non-technical audiences;- undertake a substantial statistical project under supervision.
Transferable (key) skills
Students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree in statistics;- evaluating the quality of research data and selecting suitable methods of analysis;- setting targets for project work under supervision;- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development.
Assessment
Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:- evidencing an ability to select and conduct appropriate data analyses;- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to analysing medical data;- drawing on mathematical and clinical perspectives on medical research;- evaluating and criticising existing analyses and conclusions;- make reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
