BA Chinese (Modern)

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year, students should:
- be familiar with standard Chinese (Mandarin) pronunciation and tones;
- be able to recognise and write approximately 1000 words, and to read short Chinese texts;
- be able to understand the essential features of Chinese sentence structure (subject-predicate; attributive; interrogatives, complements, particles, aspects, comparisons etc);
- be able to translate sentences and short texts from Chinese into English and vice versa;
- be able to type Chinese characters on a computer and master basic Chinese IT skills;
- be able to respond to aural comprehension questions;
- be able to conduct simple Chinese dialogues;
- have a basic understanding of Chinese history, traditional culture, and modern Chinese society;
- be able to present structured and coherent arguments;
- be able to communicate the results of their work;
- be able to engage in meaningful interaction with peers and tutors within a virtual learning environment;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills related to the subject area(s) studied, valuable for employment, eg be able to gather and process information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources, be able to use IT effectively both as a means of communication and as an aid to learning;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the area of study;
- work that covers a restricted area of the subject;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
