BA Fine Art with History of Art

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to demonstrate:
- A broadening understanding of key concepts and formal approaches to art making so that individual entry points into the complex nature of contemporary art practices are identified.
- A continued examination of historical and theoretical debates that further assist in location the individual practice within the contextual framework , both within and beyond, an expanded definition of fine art practice.
- A developing understanding of how this critical discourse informs the productive fusion of theoretical rigour and expressive speculation in resolved practice based studio work.
- A growing ability to identify and evaluate the appropriate use of different materials, processes and environments in approaches to problem solving, independently and/or collaboratively associated with fine art practices.
- An ability to communicate a critical reflection on their work and locate this in the contextual framework of art history and its debates.
- An understanding of a ‘deep approach to learning’ and adopt strategies and methodologies to engage with these principles.
- An ability to structure a coherent and critically-informed argument in oral and written forms.
- An ability to develop skills and strategies as independent learners.
- An ability to interact effectively with others.
- An ability to show initiative and resourcefulness in the planning and resolution of set and/or self-initiated projects.
- An increased awareness of professional and disciplinary boundaries.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- Time and management skills
- Effective and appropriate communication skills within peer groups and external agencies.
- Team working and negotiation skills.
- A developing knowledge of health and safety in the workplace.
- A growing understanding of the mutual, ethical and legal obligations between creative practitioners, audience and institution.
- A developing understanding of sustainability and their wider social responsibilities as it affects practice.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- Building upon and critically applying skills learned at level 1.
- Engaging further with the complex nature of contemporary art practices in a variety of media, and bring to bear their critical and analytic skills on such practices.
- Continue to examine the historical and theoretical theories and debates that feed into this practice to assist in situating themselves in the contemporary art world.
- Continue to develop personal studio work, monitor the development of this work and understand their role in its dissemination and display.
- This is achieved through, the written, exhibited and oral presentation of their work through:
The monitoring of their practical work through regular group reviews and individual and group tutorials.
A summative exhibition/display of practical work at the end of the year.
The bringing together and presentation of reference material on research subject (for level 3).
The monitoring of written work through regular assignments and presentations.
Feedback on both will enable students to monitor their own progress as well as develop their critical skills in self-evaluation and contextual understanding. It also helps to build self-confidence and effective communication skills
