Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the initial year of the Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Arts and Social Science) you should have provided evidence of being able to:
1. demonstrate a thorough understanding of the key concepts, principles and techniques associated with the subjects required to progress to their intended undergraduate degree programmes offered by the University of Leeds Faculties that are involved with this programme including the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures and the Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Law;
2. recognise and be cognisant of a range of contested ideas about subjects of relevance to their intended undergraduate degree programme;
3. use theory as an explanatory and critical tool;
4. communicate their learning effectively in a number of formats;
5. employ a range of responses to problem solving;
6. interpret relevant data, develop lines of argument and make reasoned judgements in accordance with the basic theories and concepts of the subjects they have studied to the standard required for admission to their intended undergraduate degree programmes;
7. appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
8. engage with the undergraduate degree programmes to which they are intending to progress.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the initial year of the Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Arts and Social Science) programme:
-Qualities and transferable skills necessary for further study in the undergraduate programmes to which they are intending to progress, including knowing how to:

> give presentations;
> utilise secondary data to support analysis of the relevant subject matter;
> close-read texts;
> access the University library and computing facilities;
> work co-operatively as part of a team.

- Skills necessary for time management, collecting and evaluating information, effective reading, note taking, essay writing and preparing for examinations.
- Skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and the management of own learning.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the initial year of the Bachelor Degree with Integrated International Foundation Year (Arts and Social Science) and will include:
examining the students’ knowledge and ability to apply the standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the undergraduate degree programmes with which this year is integrated by methods such as:
- assessments of presentations;
- evaluation of essays, reports and/or critiques;
- in-class tests and quizzes;
- formal written examinations.
