Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- define the underlying basic concepts, theories and principles in key disciplines in social science, including sociology, social policy, politics and criminal justice studies;
- examine, contrast and use the basic concepts, theories and principles in social science in relation to current social, economic, cultural and political issues;
- interpret qualitative and quantitative data, develop lines of argument and make reasoned judgements in accordance with the basic theories and concepts of social science;
- employ a range of responses to problem solving;
- communicate the results of their study accurately with structured and reasoned arguments;
- undertake further training and develop new skills within a structured and managed learning environment.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- the qualities and transferable skills necessary to undertake further study at undergraduate degree level in the subject area(s) studied;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- work that covers a specified area(s) of the discipline;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
