Year 3

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed knowledge and professional competencies, some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in product design;
- deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within product design;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;
- describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge from different perspectives
- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended piece of work or project;
- conform to professional boundaries and norms where applicable;
- understand the application of design to the modern industry.
- demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of essential facts, concepts, theories and principles in the field of design



Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- appreciate the social, environmental, ethical, economic and commercial considerations affecting the practice of a designer.
- demonstrate creative and innovative ability in the synthesis of solutions and in formulating designs, in particular as proved by their project work.
- comprehend the broader context of their work and select an appropriate level of detail.


Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrated their ability to cope with a significant change in their environment and to adapt to a new culture and learning paradigm;
- broadened their understanding and knowledge of design;
- gain a deeper understanding of the culture, institutions and working practices of the country in which they studied;
- where appropriate, improved their foreign language skills;
- develop transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.
