Pre-sessional Academic English for Undergraduate Studies(10 teaching weeks)

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of Level 4, you should be able to:
- use and understand very good written and spoken general and academic language to suit a clear communicative purpose;
- demonstrate a comprehensive lexical resource and range of structures, and an ability to use these coherently, accurately and fluently in academic communication;
- demonstrate a very good understanding of the expectations of study in the UK, including an ability to think critically;
- demonstrate an understanding of the culture, context and discourse of academic study in your future field.

Transferable (key) skills

On Level 4 you should begin to develop the following transferable skills:
- evaluation of sources and selection of information;
- taking comprehensive notes and integrating sources into your own work;
- efficient use of paraphrasing and referencing skills to avoid plagiarism;
- managing your study time effectively;
- identifying personal strengths and weaknesses, and setting independent learning goals;
- using independent learning resources;
- working with others to realise learning tasks.

Assessment

Level 4 will be assessed by achievement in:
- researching and writing a report or essay;
- delivering an individual presentation;
- academic listening and reading texts.
