BA History of Art with Cultural Studies

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to demonstrate:
- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features and concerns of both the histories and theories of art and cultural studies;
- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities such as critical and independent thinking, engagement with the main texts and ideas concerned with 'history', 'art' and 'culture'
- be able to communicate the results of such engagement within written and oral presentations and assignments;
- present a structured and coherent simple argument in a variety of media particularly written and oral;
- be able to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of both the history of art and cultural studies;
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with both the histories of art and cultural studies;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- demonstrate an awareness of professional and disciplinary boundaries;

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- Time and management skills
- Effective and appropriate communication skills, particularly in written and oral form.
- Team working and negotiation skills amongst peers
- Basic research skills
- Critical skills as emerging independent thinkers and learners

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the histories of art and cultural studies;
- produce work that enables students to understand both the boundaries of and interconnections between the histories of art and cultural studies;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies pertinent to the preliminary studies of the histories of art and their wider cultural contexts;

This will be enabled through:

The monitoring of written work through regular assignments and presentations.
Feedback on both written which will enable students to monitor their own progress as well as develop their critical skills in self-evaluation and contextual understanding. This also helps to build self-confidence and effective communication skills.
