BA Learning and Teaching (Special Educational Needs and Disability)

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have demonstrated:
Knowledge and critical understanding of:
- a range of perspectives on the nature of SEND and approaches to inclusive educational practice in different settings;
- the broader educational context which impacts upon provision for the range of learners;
- the range of SEND, and of approaches used to promote effective learning in relation to at least one specific learning difficulty;
- the design and delivery of the curriculum and of the rationale and techniques for assessment used in different learning settings with a range of learners;
- the wider social, cultural, political, economic and global contexts within which learning occurs;
- relevant concepts, knowledge, practical skills and methods of enquiry in teaching and learning in both a research and work context;
- educational processes and practices relating to a range of learners;
- models of pedagogy;
- relevant research techniques;
- relevant current educational and SEND-related research;
- ethical issues associated with the design and implementation of research into a range of learners.
Ability to:
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an evidence-based argument;
- critically evaluate models of pedagogy;
- effectively communicate complex information, arguments, evaluation and analysis in a variety of forms;
- actively engage with recent research and scholarship in the learning and teaching discipline;
- demonstrate an understanding and facility for the application and analysis of appropriate research techniques;
- apply knowledge and critical understanding in order to initiate and carry out a research project;
- demonstrate advanced skills and competences and a reflective approach in a professional teaching or learning support role;
- meet professional standards where relevant.
Use of the following professional skills:
- contribution to the planning and development of learning activities for a range of learners;
- recognition of the need to support and include all learners and appropriate response to this;
- monitoring of learner progress and provision of feedback using a range of assessment techniques;
- contribution to the selection, preparation and differentiation of suitable learning resources;
- development of effective support strategies to ensure acknowledgement of diversity and equality of opportunity;
- commitment to collaborative and co-operative working with colleagues;
- commitment to continuing professional development and evaluation of practice.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment in supporting learners, including those with SEND, in a range of professional contexts and roles;
- skills necessary for the communication of information in a variety of formats, including the use of technology;;
- skills necessary for the exercising of professional responsibility in supporting learners, including those with SEND
- skills necessary to identify and undertake appropriate professional development.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the
modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the discipline;
-work that draws on a wide variety of material;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
-demonstrate a broad knowledge base;
- use of a range of formats for assessment that demonstrate skills of effective communication for both academic and professional settings.
