Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts of how aircraft and the aviation industry work and the interplay between these; qualitative and quantitative information gathering, analysis and use in aviation problem solving; practical laboratory competencies and techniques which are standard features of the aviation discipline, encompassing aviation’s underlying engineering science and mathematics, the basis of aircraft and the aviation industry and the place of aviation in the global transport system;
- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities i.e.
- be able to communicate the results of their work in the form of discussions, presentations and written reports on key topics in aviation;
- present a structured and coherent simple argument in response to an aviation problem or challenge;
- be able to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of the aviation discipline;
- evaluate qualitative and quantitative data and acquire an initial sense of how to integrate these into overall insight, into how civil aviation works and how real world problems are overcome;
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different quantitative and qualitative approaches to problem solving associated with the aviation discipline;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners and develop initial strategies to respond to these and fill any gaps;
- demonstrate an awareness of professional and disciplinary boundaries and the high safety, ethical and professionalism expectations of the aviation industry.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- qualities (especially professionalism in the aviation industry) and transferable skills (such as information gathering, analysis and reporting and interpersonal and team skills) necessary for the wide range of employment pathways related to aviation and allied sectors;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and professional ethics, as expected by the safety conscious civil aviation industry.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard aviation concepts, qualitative and quantitative information and experimental and analytical techniques relevant to the develop students' skills and confidence and aviation discipline;
- work that covers a restricted area of the aviation discipline;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies and their integration in response to aviation industry challenges;
- the ability to contribute to a short project, as a team member, through defining aims and objectives in response to a gap in aviation knowledge, selecting methodologies to fill this gap, analysing data and reporting outcomes.
