Foundation Degree Learning and Teaching (Special Educational Needs and Disability)

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are associated with the theory and practice of learning and teaching and of support for learners with SEND with particular reference to:
- understanding learning;
- developing teaching skills to meet learners' needs;
- typical and atypical child development;
- inclusion and SEND;
- working with others;
- identify ethical issues in their professional practice and be able to work these through where they present questions of conflicting priorities and moral imperatives;
- show awareness of the global context of their educational practice and recognise the nature and impact of the cultural settings of their work;
- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities i.e.
- be able to communicate the results of their work;
- present a structured and coherent simple argument;
- be able to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of the discipline;
- evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative data;
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with the discipline;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- demonstrate an awareness of professional and disciplinary boundaries;

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment in supporting learners in a range of professional contexts
- skills necessary for the exercising of professional responsibility in supporting learners, including those with SEND

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to learning support roles;
- use of a range of formats for assessment that develop skills of effective communication for both academic and professional settings;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies relevant to the learning support role
