Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should have shown evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the structure and dynamics of the internal structure of the earth and the geophysical techniques used to study it;
- test hypotheses by designing and performing sophisticated geophysical surveys, without guidance;
- carry out an independent geophysical research project and produce a piece of written work capable of inclusion for publication;
- make a critical assessment of aspects of recent research and advanced scholarship and make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources;
- demonstrate an expert knowledge of a specialist field of geophysics, such as formation and extraction of earth resources, natural hazards etc
- write computer programs to solve complex numerical and geophysical problems;
- adapt, develop and create new methods of enquiry;
- process and interpret geophysical data taking full account of uncertainties, ambiguities and method limitations.

Transferable (key) skills

Undergraduate Masters students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the ability to communicate knowledge, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;
- the ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a team;
- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in industry or area of professional practice;
- the skills necessary for the exercising self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations.


Achievement for the degree of Undergraduate Master's will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:

- evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
