Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate in-depth subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and understanding and skills related to the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and National Curriculum and in relation to the wider educational context, a range of educational issues and teaching and learning strategies;
- demonstrate an advanced understanding of techniques and rationale for classroom-based practitioner research and advanced scholarship;
- demonstrate the capacity to describe, analyse and evaluate aspects of their own practice and that of other education professionals;
- demonstrate the ability to recognise distinctive features of a particular educational context and how these might impact upon teaching and learning;
- with guidance, to develop ideas for classroom-based enquiry through formulation of hypotheses, the development, implementation and execution of plans, analysis and evaluation of outcomes;
- appreciate the value of evidence-based practice as a vehicle for professional development and school improvement;
- evaluate critically current issues and research in the discipline of education;
- take a proactive and self-reflective role in relation to their professional development;

Transferable (key) skills

• the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
• evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
• self-direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
• independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
• critically to engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

• demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
• drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
• evaluating received opinion;
• making sound judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
