Learning outcomes
On completion of the programme students should have shown evidence of being able to: Learning Outcomes from PG Cert- Apply technical skills and theoretical knowledge appropriate for performance of difficult or complex dental extractions- Appraise the ethical and legal framework for proper consent of patients- Critically appraise the process of development, and the limitations of, clinical guidelines relevant to the field of oral surgery.- Apply specialist-level knowledge and sound clinical judgement in discussing treatment with patients.- Analyse patient and peer feedback in order to guide personal development- Critique the rationale for and means of delivery of clinical audit.- Utilise the clinical audit cycle to guide personal development- Demonstrate a critical understanding of management skills and their importance to services and companies.- Apply advanced communication skills in respect of clinical management, presentations to peers and teaching.- Recognise basic organisations and their objectives.- Identify the different functional areas of management (planning, staffing, organisation, controlling and leading) Additional learning outcomes- Summarise the ethical framework for conducting research- Apply a working knowledge of the processes of defining research questions and designing and delivering a research project.- Appraise concepts, models and theories of quality improvement.- Critically appraise the relevance of improvement techniques in professional regulation and personal development.- Apply specialist knowledge in the inception, design and delivery of quality improvement projects.- Critically appraise scientific literature in order to identify areas of clinical need and/or societal impact.- Apply expert knowledge of scientific principals relevant to translation of basic science to clinical problems relevant to the subject matter.

Masters (Taught), Postgraduate Diploma & Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:- In depth knowledge of research methods, ethical considerations and statistical analysis in clinical and translational research.- High level clinical judgement using available clinical guidance, including effective communication with patients.- Intellectual and analytical skills to enable the student to undertake a higher degree research project and/or service improvement project.- Sound understanding of the principles of service improvement and how they can be applied in a variety of settings.
Assessment
Achievement for the Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:- Exercising their knowledge and understanding of statistics and methodology in design of a research project.- Demonstration of in depth knowledge of the ethical and legal considerations in design and execution of a research project.- Demonstration of their understanding of quality improvement methodology in designing a project for a local quality improvement project, understanding and anticipating the barriers and how they may be overcome. - Demonstration of specialist knowledge and understanding of translational science and the clinical applications in general and specific situations.
