Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of one or more aspects of the cultures, history, politics, geography, social and economic structures of Middle Eastern/North African societies;
- demonstrate, especially through work on core modules, a broad understanding of the concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features in a range of aspects of the discipline, including:

critical engagement with major thinkers, debates and methods of enquiry in the field, putting them to productive use
- demonstrate knowledge of a range of texts, genres and cultural practices, and the ability to produce close and informed analysis of these;
- consider critical, ethical, and analytical views other than their own, and exercise a degree of independent and informed critical judgement in analysis;
- use a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information.

In the Arabic language, they will:
- be able to achieve lower intermediate communication in Arabic with native or other competent speakers;
- be able to effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;
- have consolidated and extended knowledge and understanding of basic structures of the Arabic language;
- be able to demonstrate complex receptive and productive language skills in a variety of contexts;
- be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of one or more aspects of the cultures, history, social and political structures of the societies of the country or countries where Arabic is spoken;
- demonstrate an awareness and understanding of one or more cultures and societies, other than their own, that will normally have been significantly enhanced by a period of residence in an Arabic speaking country.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
1. qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;
2. skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
3. decision making.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
1. demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of concepts, competencies and techniques of the discipline to complex situations and instances in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;
2. demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to Islamic/Middle Eastern/North African culture, society and politics;
3. demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of concepts, competencies and techniques of the discipline to complex, albeit standard, situations and simple, albeit novel or atypical, instances, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;
4. demonstrating the ability to deploy techniques for working closely with primary sources, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;
5. demonstrating the ability to think cross-culturally, depending on the students’ choice of modules.
6. demonstrating an ability to construct and effectively communicate arguments and analysis in various contexts;
7. demonstrating an ability to think analytically and communicate effectively, and to draw broad connections between different parts of module content;
8. demonstrate an ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion in the discipline of Islamic/Middle Eastern/North African Studies, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level;
9. demonstrate the capacity to understand, use and critically evaluate some of the main methods of enquiry in Islamic/Middle Eastern/North African, in accordance with the learning outcomes for this level
10. demonstrating understanding and use of Arabic through listening, reading, speaking and writing.
11. understanding of Arabic through the assessment of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
