BA Interdisciplinary Studies with Preparation for Higher Education

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of level 0 students will:
1.  Understand key ideas and theories associated with academic study in healthcare and the social sciences. 
2. Demonstrate the academic, reflective and personal skills necessary for successful study in higher education. 
3. Articulate and pursue clear goals for ongoing academic, personal and professional development. 

Transferable (key) skills

Teaching on the course takes a blended learning approach with a mixture of online and on-campus delivery. Students are encouraged and supported to develop independent study skills, alongside working in collaboration with their peers in small study groups.

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
-ability to analyse and critically evaluate basic issues in the subject disciplines covered on the course;
-academic skills required for basic enquiry along with the ability to communicate information, understanding, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;
-ability to make effective and critical use of electronic resources for their learning;
-ability to plan for their own personal and professional development.

Assessment

Assessment of learning and development reflects some of the methods used on degree programmes across the University and includes; academic essays and research projects, reflective journal writing, a group presentation, and exams. Students are also supported to develop self-assessment techniques including interpreting assignment briefs and instructions.

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
-opportunity to demonstrate understanding of relevant concepts and theoretical perspectives in the subject disciplines covered on the course;
-use of a range of formats for assessed work that develop skills of effective communication for an academic setting;
-encouragement to explore new ideas and to test and evaluate received opinion.
