Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
• demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the semiotics of multimodal texts; 
• critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in the discipline; 
• demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of translation and localization strategies and techniques to enable communication, both monolingually and interlingually; 
• demonstrate in-depth specialist knowledge of translation and localisation solutions in regards to different audiences with different needs and/or expectations; 
• exhibit competence in working with dedicated subtitling, dubbing, speech recognition, localization and computer-assisted translation technology; 
• demonstrate confidence in working on simulated translation and localization projects in collaboration with other practitioners; 
• take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others.

Masters (Taught), Postgraduate Diploma & Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

• Create intralingual and interlingual audiovisual translation solutions for different purposes and audiences; 
• Use audiovisual translation, localisation and computer-assisted translation technology to produce professional deliverables; 
• Operate as a professional linguist in various specialised and audiovisual translation as well as localisation workflows; 
• Create and apply appropriate translation and localisation quality assessment metrics; 
• Work in teams to deliver linguistic products on time, within the required quality specifications; 
• Independent learning and the ability to critically and constructively assess their own achievements and that of others; 
• Critically engage in the development of the language industry. 

Assessment

Assessment
Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

Translation, audiovisual translation and localisation assignments, on-going individual practice with audiovisual translation, localisation and computer-assisted translation software, commentaries, essays, a final project involving translation, subtitling or dissertation and a series of team projects in which students will be given the opportunity to assume different roles throughout the year (translator, project manager, localiser, reviser, etc). and learn professional skills regarding email communication (with client and revisers), quoting, invoicing and planning and time management,. As such both independent and teamwork are included.
