BA East Asian Studies and Japanese

Learning outcomes

1. Upper Intermediate Language Proficiency in Japanese: You will achieve an upper-intermediate level of language proficiency, enabling you to engage in meaningful conversations on a broad spectrum of topics, demonstrating competence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Japanese, and expressing yourself with a greater level of cultural and linguistic fluency.

2. Enhanced Translation Skills in Japanese: You will have grasped the fundamental principles of translation, learning how to convey content while considering language accuracy and clarity. You will be aware of the cultural aspects impacting translation decisions, allowing you to handle a range of translations with increased competence.

3. Effective Research and Analysis in Japanese and East Asian Studies: You will develop your knowledge and expertise in how to conduct effective research, including finding, evaluating, and synthesizing information from diverse sources.

4. Academic Communication Skills in Japanese and East Asian Studies: You will present your work effectively to an academic audience, for example through written reports, essays or oral presentations, adapting your communication style to reflect different academic contexts and requirements.

Skills Learning Outcomes
1. Critical Thinking: You will cultivate the ability to critically analyse and evaluate cultural topics, recognising multiple perspectives and nuances within a given culture.

2. Global Awareness: You will attain a broader understanding of the global implications of Japanese and East Asian culture, society, and politics, enabling you to view the topics they study within a global context.

3. Reflective Practice: You will engage in reflective thinking, assessing your own cultural experiences and impressions, for example drawn from your year abroad, and integrating these reflections into your academic discussions and analyses.

4. Peer Review and Feedback: You will learn how to receive and provide constructive feedback within academic communities, contributing to their overall engagement and improvement.

Competence Standards
1. Integrated Advanced Japanese Language Competency: Effectively communicate in Japanese through verbal and written means at an advanced level, demonstrating appropriate use of grammar, language styles and structures, and showing cultural awareness across diverse situations.

2. Culture/Society Proficiency Competency Standard: Effectively communicate key facts, ideas, and theories, verbally and in written form, showcasing a sophisticated understanding of modern Japanese and East Asian society and culture.

3. Independent Learning Competency Standard: Effectively engage in independent academic research and apply findings.

4. Connect language skills with a deeper understanding of contemporary Japan and East Asian Studies.

5. Exhibit critical analysis to the study of Japan and Japanese society at an advanced level.

Assessment

Approach to assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include essays, commentaries, portfolio, individual and group presentations, group research projects, oral assignments, and exams.
