BA East Asian Studies and Japanese

Learning outcomes

1. Advanced Language Proficiency in Japanese: You will attain an advanced level of language proficiency in Japanese, allowing you to understand wide-ranging topics, engage in complex conversations, and articulate ideas fluently and accurately.

2. Advanced Translation and Interpretation Skills in Japanese: You will translate a wide range of complex texts, including specialised content, effectively handling both formal and informal language alongside different genres with a high degree of accuracy and fluency. You will also demonstrate advanced interpretation skills, interpreting spoken language in various contexts, and adapting your skills to suit various registers and styles.

3. Cross-Disciplinary Understanding in Japanese and East Asian Studies: You will develop the ability to draw connections between different disciplines within Japanese and East Asian studies, fostering a holistic and advanced understanding of Japan's and East Asia’s global significance.

4. Research Skills in Japanese and East Asian Studies: You will have honed your research skills to an advanced level, enabling you to conduct an independent piece of extended research, such as a final year project, on multifaceted topics in Japanese and East Asian Studies, synthesising information from a diverse range of sources, and constructing original, well-informed, nuanced arguments.

Skills Learning Outcomes
1. Effective Communication: You will excel in oral and written communication, delivering complex ideas and research findings with clarity and precision of value in both academic and professional settings.

2. Intercultural Competency: You will exhibit advanced intercultural competency, respecting and navigating cultural differences effectively in diverse social and professional environments.

3. Project Management: You will gain expertise in project management, through an extended research project within the field of Japanese and East Asian studies, demonstrating advanced self-management and independent study skills.

Competence Standards
1. Integrated Advanced Japanese Language Competency: Effectively communicate in Japanese through verbal and written means at an advanced level, demonstrating appropriate use of grammar, language styles and structures, and showing cultural awareness across diverse situations.

2. Advanced Culture/Society Proficiency Competency Standard: Proficiently and persuasively communicate key facts, ideas, and theories, both verbally and in written form, demonstrating a sophisticated and in-depth understanding of modern Japanese and East Asian society and culture.

3. Independent Learning Competency Standard: Show a high level of proficiency in self-directed learning, clearly demonstrating independently acquired knowledge and skills, along with the capacity to seek appropriate support when needed.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include essays, commentaries, portfolio, individual and group presentations, group research projects, oral assignments, and exams.
