Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this programme, you will be able to:  

1. demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of techniques relevant to the study of TESOL.

2. distinguish between diverse TESOL contexts and identify how learner needs and teaching procedures vary systematically.

3. critically appraise research knowledge and theoretical frameworks for language learning, teaching and assessment in TESOL and use them to make decisions in your professional context.

4. design, carry out and report educational research with potential impact for your professional practice.

5. formulate ideas and hypotheses for developing your professional practice, implement these in a context-sensitive way and evaluate their impact.

Skills Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, you will be able to:

1. reflect on your and others’ teaching and learning experiences and plan for future development.

2. critically consider theories, procedures and techniques of language teaching and learning in relation to your own context

3. creatively and critically design and evaluate language learning materials, lessons and assessments.

4. collaborate with peers to generate and review ideas for innovation.

5. investigate a topic of intellectual or professional interest using appropriate research methods and skills.

6. search for, evaluate and use a variety of information sources across a variety of formats, media and technologies, to help strengthen the quality of academic work and independent research.

7. demonstrate independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development.

8. plan time, prioritise tasks and organise academic and personal commitments effectively.

Assessment

Your achievement on the programme will be measured by performance on module assignments. Each assignment is unique and will give you an opportunity to demonstrate how far you have achieved the module’s learning outcomes. The format may be written or oral, individual or group. You will be required to read widely and use evidence from relevant theoretical and empirical research literature, as well as from your own experience and contextual knowledge, to develop arguments and/or critical reflection in areas of TESOL. Clear guidelines and structured support will be provided for all assessments.
