Objectives
On completion of this module, students will be able to:- critically analyse the impact of current government policy on needs assessment and prioritisation of service provision;
- critically analyse the concept of need and its relationship to health and health assessment;
- examine and evaluate a range of models and theories of health assessment;
- identify and utilise current sources of health related data and contribute to the development of such data;
- appraise a variety of tools for the profiling of client populations;
- debate the involvement and influence of consumers and consumerism in health needs assessment;
- critically evaluate the role of technology in health needs assessment.
Learning outcomes
This module will allow the students to develop the following knowledge and understanding in:
- nurses' contribution and role in health needs assessment;
- issues surrounding health needs assessment and risk assessment of client groups and populations;
- developing the skills to identify, critically analyse and implement current tools and frameworks and to contribute to the development of new tools;
- political, socio-economic and environmental issues;
- models and theories of health needs assessment;
- sources of epidemiological and demographic data;
- interpretation of 'hard' and soft 'data';
- concept of need and equity;
- policy and planning in relation to health needs assessment;
- consumer involvement and consumerism;
- technology as an aid to health needs assessment.
Syllabus
This module will allow students to explore issues surrounding health needs assessment and risk assessment of client groups and populations, to develop the skills to allow them to identify, critically analyse and implement current tools and frameworks and to contribute to the development of new tools. Political, socio-economic and environmental issues will be explored. This will be achieved by addressing the following: models and theories of health needs assessment; sources of epidemiological and demographic data; interpretation of 'hard' and soft 'data'; risk assessment; concept of need and equity; nurses' contribution and role in health needs assessment; policy and planning in relation to health needs assessment; consumer involvement and consumerism; technology as an aid to health needs assessment.
