Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:1. Critically explore fundamental concepts which underpin contemporary healthcare.
2. Competently identify and access relevant and up to date evidence to inform practice.
3. Demonstrate a critical awareness of reflective practice.
4. Analyse and discuss the development of health and welfare services, non statutory organisations and community networks.
5. Critically analyse the concepts ‘patient/person centeredness'.
6. Explore and analyse values and attitudes in relation to partnership working.
7. Discuss how homeostasis provides a context for understanding the concept of health.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should know:
- a range of skills abilities and qualities that are required for effective working arrangements;
- the importance of intra and inter professional learning and working for the benefit of the service user and carer;
- how diversity and inequality may influence well-being and know how legal and ethical issues contribute to nursing practice;
- how to reflect on the nature and expectations of their own and other health and social care professions;
- the concept of homeostasis;
- developing search strategies;
- accessing evidence.

- Personal motivations and aspirations.
- The nature and expectations of the professional nurse.
- Interprofessional learning and multidisciplinary team working.
- Historical, cultural and legislative changes which have influenced the development of healthcare.
- Concepts and models of reflective practice.
- Professional proficiencies including; self-awareness, compassion, care and empathy, dignity and respect, communication skills and relationship building and team working skills.
- Cells as functional units of life.
- Anatomy and Physiology of the respiratory, cardiac, endocrine, skeletal, renal, reproductive and nervous systems.
- Concept of homeostatis and how this is achieved and can be altered.
- Emotion, motivation, cognition and stress and how these responses relate to healthcare.
- Social psychology and sociology including judgement, attitudes and prejudices.

Private study
*These hours meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery CouncilStudents will be required to complete a formative guided study package designed to provide coherence and applicability of taught and learned content.
Students will be required to do pre-session reading and prepare for seminars and tutorials.
Revision time for the examination as well as researching and completing the module written assignment will also be part of the private study time.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress will be monitored through the completion of the guided study package, their contribution to seminars and tutorials and successful completion of the module exam and assignment. Attendance at taught sessions, tutorials and seminars will also be closely monitored.Methods of assessment
