Module summary

It covers the physical, mathematical and computational aspects related to Radionuclide Imaging applied to Medicine and Biology for diagnostic and research proposes.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the different scientific and technological aspects in radionuclide imaging and what are the relevant clinical and preclinical applications.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Master what is Radionuclide Imaging, what are its fundamental principles and how the field has evolved over the years
2. Identify, characterise and analyse the methods of radiopharmaceutical production for radionuclide imaging and therapy
3. Explain the basic physical interactions of radiation with matter and convey the principles of dosimetry of internally distributed radionuclides
4. Assess and compare the use of different radiotracers in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
5. Explain in detail the concept of image reconstruction and how it is utilised to obtain a 3D image using SPECT and PET
6. Provide comprehensive examples of clinical and preclinical use of radionuclide imaging
7. Understand what are dynamic PET and SPECT and why are they useful
8. Clarify and prioritise the key limitations of the existing techniques
9. Contextualise what molecular multimodality imaging is and how it helps advance the fields of medicine and biology
