Module summary

Health care provision is undergoing constant review and change. Increasingly, the context in which care is provided is changing, these include, both patient and client groups, the people who provide the care, fiscal and other resource constraints and priorities and the expectations of the general public are changing. These constant changes mean that nurses need to recognise the role they play in healthcare, as well as being flexible in their delivery and management of care. It also means that they are able to anticipate and deliver intelligent, active, responsive and insightful care by challenging and making relationships between knowledge and experiences. This module aims to prepare the student nurse for his/her role as a qualified nurse, identify the requirements for this and what will be needed in the preceptorship phase.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- debate and analyse professional issues relating to clinical practice;
- reflect upon and critically appraise the organisation and management of care relating to current clinical experiences;
- demonstrate a critical and analytical knowledge of a range of management strategies and skills;
- analyse and synthesise different leadership styles and theories;
- apply, analyse, synthesise and evaluate the role of the nurse as teacher and assessor in clinical practice;
- critically appraise and reflect upon individual strengths and weaknesses through the use of a structured reflective model;
- reflect upon and critically analyse client needs in relation to current clinical practice;
- appraise and evaluate care provision in a variety of settings relating to current local and national policies;
- evaluate the role of the health care professional in identifying and managing ethical and legal issues that arise within clinical practice;
- critically analyse service user and carer led evaluation of service provision across health and social care settings;
- debate and analyse the issues of cultural and ethnic diversity in the structured review of service provision across healthcare settings;
- confidently debate the range of selected practice situations and limitations of current thinking, which challenges professional boundaries;
- demonstrate achievement of defined NMC Competencies;
- demonstrate achievement of the EU requirements;
- demonstrate achievement of clinical skills.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module the students should know:
- the roles and responsibilities of a qualified nurse in managing a clinical area;
- the requirements to become a qualified member of staff and what may be needed in their preceptorship period;
- the main principles of teaching and assessing in clinical practice;
- how to deal with and manage a range of difficult/complex problems which will draw upon their decision making skills;
- current national and local policies and issues;
- how to provide appropriate care to different people experiencing a range of clinical problems taking into account issues relating to culture, diversity, healthcare ethics and law.

The AiP documents can be resubmitted by students if failure was due to incomplete documentation. Students who have been recorded as a fail in practice by their mentor will need to repeat the placement. There is no compensation between the assessment elements. The essay, unseen examination, Assessment in Practice, EU Directives document (not mental health and learning disability students) and Clinical Skills workbook all have to be passed to successfully achieve the module. The word allowance allocated to the Assessment in Practice Document is notional.

1hr Unseen Exam (EX2) = Unseen Medicines and Numeracy Exam (Pass/Fail) There is no compensation between the assessment elements. Students need to achieve a pass mark in each of the two examinations adn the Assessment in Practice document - Stage 3, Clinical Skills Workbook and the European Directives (except mental health and learning disability students) to be able to successfully complete the module.
