Pre-requisite qualifications

GCSE Single Chemistry or GCSE Double Science.

Students on prescribed programmes, without A level chemistry (Grade A-C) or equivalent) have to study this module.

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

- To provide a background in basic inorganic chemistry theory for students who lack A level Chemistry, drawing throughout on examples taken from the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
- To equip students with the chemical background to undertake level 2 Earth and Environmental Sciences modules.

Syllabus

- The structure of the atom: Spectra, and electron configurations.
- Chemical periodicity, electronic structure and the period table Chemical bonding. Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding.
- Chemical reactions, chemical notation, equations and stoichiometry.
- The mole concept; introduction to quantitative chemistry.
- Chemical equilibria, pH and redox reactions. Minerals as chemicals.
