Module summary
This module studies Ovid's reworking of Greek, Oriental and Roman myths and legends in the form of an epic poem centred on the theme of transformation. The poem is studied in English translation (tr. A.D. Melville, Ovid: Metamorphoses, Oxford 1987). The module is worth 10 credits and runs in semester 2 only, with one lecture per week and two seminars during the course of the semester. On completion of this module, students should be able to understand and appreciate the significance of Ovid's reworking of Greek, Oriental and Roman myth and legend in the form of an epic poem centred on the theme of transformation (metamorphosis). The lectures will describe the mythological traditions upon which Ovid has drawn, outline the plot of the poem, and discuss various interpretations of he work by modern scholars. The influence of the 'Metamorphosis' on European literature and art will also be considered.Syllabus
