Module summary
This module is suitable for those students with an advanced level of Latin (A-Level standard or equivalent) who have gained at least a pass mark in either CLAS1911 Latin Texts and Grammar 1 or CLAS1991 Latin Texts and Grammar 1A. The grammar classes provide more advanced instruction in Latin, as well as unseen translation practice. The text classes will focus on two key works of Ovidian poetry from the early imperial period: Ars Amatoria and Metamorphoses. Handouts of the relevant texts will be given. The focus of the module is on the fluent and accurate reading of the Latin, which involves close attention to all aspects of the language. Due attention will be given, however, to thematic issues raised by the texts. The module is worth 20 credits and runs in semester 2 only, with three classes per week. For further information, visit us at the Electives Fair or contact the Department of Classics, situated on the first floor of the Parkinson Building, south end (email: classics@leeds.ac.uk; website: www.leeds.ac.uk/classics/; telephone: 0113 343 3537).Objectives

- translate texts sensitively and accurately and comment on their subject-matter from linguistic, stylistic, literary and thematic perspectives where appropriate.
Learning outcomes
Students completing this module are expected to have acquired:
- a knowledge of aspects of advanced Latin grammar and syntax;
- an increased ability to translate texts accurately and sensitively;
- a knowledge of the linguistic, stylistic, literary and thematic issues pertaining to the given texts
Skills outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- demonstrate a range of subject-specific skills, including an ability to analyse Latin texts critically and produce fluent and accurate translations of those texts;
- demonstrate a range of transferable skills, including organisation of personal study and participation in oral discussion in class.
Syllabus
The grammar classes involve advanced Latin grammar and unprepared translation from Latin. The text classes involve study of selected parts of two key works of Ovidian poetry from the early imperial period: Ars Amatoria and Metamorphoses. The focus is on the fluent and accurate reading of the Latin, which involves close attention to all aspects of the language. Due attention will be given, however, to thematic issues raised by the texts, in particular: the ways in which genre plays a part in the thematic and stylistic outlook of each poem, and the ways in which the same poet can take on different moods/ personas.
