Module summary

This module is suitable for those students with an advanced level of Latin who have gained at least a pass mark in CLAS1912 Latin Texts and Grammar 2. These classes will focus on advanced Latin grammar and translation of unprepared texts. There will also be an element of private reading of set texts. The set texts this year are a selection taken from in and around the Age of Augustus: Vergil, Eclogues; Livy Book 1; Tibullus, Elegies 1; Seneca, Controversiae. Handouts of texts will be provided. In all classes, emphasis will be on recognition and use of advanced aspects of Latin grammar, as well as fluent and accurate reading of texts. The module is worth 20 credits and runs in both semesters, with two classes per week. Objectives

The module concentrates on advanced Latin grammar, unseen translation practice and private reading of set texts. On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- recognise and explain the use of aspects of advanced Latin grammar, syntax and metre;
- translate prepared and unprepared texts with increased accuracy and sensitivity.

Learning outcomes
Students completing this module are expected to have acquired:
- a working knowledge of metre;
- an increased knowledge of aspects of advanced Latin grammar and syntax;
- an increased ability to translate Latin texts accurately and sensitively.

Skills outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced range of subject-specific skills, including an ability to recognise and use advanced aspects of Latin grammar, analyse Latin texts critically and produce fluent and accurate translations of those texts;
- demonstrate a range of transferable skills, including organisation of personal study and participation in oral discussion in class.
