Objectives
To introduce, to discuss, and to enjoy the writings of three major figures of the English Renaissance in the Romance genre.To investigate the importance of the late Greek prose romance for the understanding of the genre in the sixteenth/seventeenth centuries.
To reconsider the significance of the derided genre of romance.
Learning outcomes
Students will have developed:

Syllabus
After considering two sixteenth-century translations of Greek prose romances important to the defining of the genre in the English Renaissance, we will consider, in chronological sequence, the original version of Sidney's "Arcadia"; Book 3 of Spenser's allegorical romance, "The Faerie Queene", and two of Shakespeare's late plays.

Teaching will be through weekly seminars (10 x 1 hour) plus up to 5 additional hours (content to be determined by the module tutor). The 5 additional hours may include lectures, plenary sessions, film showings, or the return of unassessed/assessed essays.Private Study: Reading, seminar preparation, essay writing.
