Module summary

The aim of this module is to provide an economic understanding of the forms of competition and rivalry between private firms in a modern industrial economy. The module provides an overview of the historic evolution of industrial economies while focusing on recent developments in the study of firms' behaviour, with particular emphasis on a range of key topics including: advertising, vertical dominance, oligopoly, barriers to competition, and the effects of international trade. The approach taken combines model exposition (diagrammatic) with assessments of evidence.Further information about the Business School is available on the website: Business School

Objectives

At the end of this module students will be able to demonstrate the following: knowledge of the fundamentals of game theory and its application to industrial economics, oligopoly theory in respect of price competition, quantity competition and entry deterrence, the application of oligopoly theory to selected topics; evidence of having read a suitable selection of the material provided on the reading list; and the ability to incorporate knowledge of actual markets and firms within the context of the relevant theory.

Syllabus

The traditional analysis of industrial organisation; game theory and its application to oligopoly theory; new theories of competition and the firm; selected issues in industrial economics.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The past exam papers for this module in academic years 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 each provide a good guide both to the format and style of the exam. Each student taking this module will be given the opportunity to attempt and submit at least one practice essay to the lecturer for marking and feedback.
