Objectives

On completion of this module, students will: be familiar with the meaning of (most) accounting terminology; be aware of the types of financial statements that are included in a published set of accounts, and have developed an understanding of how these statements are produced; be able to interpret financial information arising from virtually any organisation; and be able to understand the distinctions between accounting information produced by an organisation for external publication in the form of financial statements and accounting information produced for the internal purposes of planning, decision making and control.

Syllabus

Essential accounting terminology and concepts, and an introduction to basic financial statements; The preparation of accounts; problems associated with valuing assets and liabilities; including consideration of depreciation methods and the valuation of inventories and work in progress; and The interpretation of accounts, including company profiling, an introduction to the calculation and interpretation of financial ratios as a means of assessing company performance, and CORE Analysis as a means of strategic performance appraisal using financial statements.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be expected to complete non-assessed coursework during the semester. This coursework takes the form of one piece of tutor-marked coursework together with two multiple-choice quizzes. The tutor-marked coursework will be marked and returned to the student with comments and a detailed answer. Each multiple-choice quiz contains questions relevant to particular topic areas of the module and should completed electronically via the LUBS2235 Nathan Bodington site. Students will be expected to review their performance in the quiz, obtaining feedback on the questions answered incorrectly and the actual solutions
