Module summary
The aim of this module is to give students an understanding of the nature of labour markets and labour market institutions. The module provides students with a grounding in competing theoretical perspectives in labour economics. The module will also enable students to apply these theories so as to account for various market labour market phenomena.Objectives
The module provides an introduction to the subject area of labour economics, focusing in particular on the nature and significance of labour market institutions. Emphasis is given to interpreting and evaluating competing theoretical perspectives.Syllabus
Topics covered include: the employment relationship; the structure of the UK labour market; labour market regulation and deregulation; internal labour markets; trade unions and economic performance; skills, training and productivity; labour market segmentation; wage differentials; labour demand and supply; gender discrimination in the labour market; unemployment.
