Module summary

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the theoretical approach that economists take to trade unions in the labour market. The module covers both the orthodox and the modern approaches to the analysis of trade unions, including bargaining between trade unions and employers. The various models are critically evaluated in terms of their capacity to explain the role of trade unions in different institutional contexts.Further information about the Business School is available on the website: Business School

Objectives

On completion of this module, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: the economic models used to analyse trade unions; the limitations of these models; the literature in economics which utilises these models.

Syllabus

The effects of trade unions on wages, employment, allocative and technical efficiency in the orthodox theoretical framework; the monopoly union model; Nash bargaining; the right-to-manage model; and the efficient bargaining model.
