Module summary

This module examines the nature and the legacy of the command economy, the major methods of transformation to a market economy and their results in Eastern Europe and Russia. It also focuses on membership and prospects of membership in the European Union. The module considers the relationship between the EU and Russia, and the impact of EU enlargement on trade, FDI and labour in Eastern Europe and Russia.

Objectives

The module aims to familiarise students with the response of Eastern Europe and Russia to the new international business environment (particularly the end of the Cold War and increased regional integration associated with the European Union). The module will also examine the legacy of the Command Economy and the main methods of transformation to a market economy in these countries.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will have acquired/practiced a number of skills including: research skills - readings for the module, written communication and information literacy - written exam, problem solving, interpersonal communication and teamwork - case study sessions.

Private study

Students will be expected to supplement lecture material (i.e., a general survey of each topic) with their private study. For each lecture, a summary will be given out in the form of a PowerPoint handout, together with handouts of data and other material as appropriate. Students are expected to read all the lecture notes and the attached material, and then to follow it up with further reading from the reading list. Students will also be encouraged to revisit the case studies and suggested responses to monitor their progress throughout the module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress will be monitored through class discussion during case study sessions. During these sessions students will be expected to apply the theoretical knowledge gained during the lectures and their private study to answering case study questions. Students will be given feedback on their responses by the lecturer during the class and they will also be provided with suggested responses to the case studies after the class has finished.

Two hour written unseen examination paper at the end of the Semester in which the module is delivered. Students will be asked to answer 3 out of 7 questions.
