Objectives

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

Demonstrate understanding of the changing context and process of personnel management and development within contemporary work organisations;

Describe and evaluate the research evidence supporting personnel management practices in the key functional areas of employee selection, training and development and performance management;

Evaluate the practical application of theoretical models relating to personnel management and development;

and Critically assesses the main problems associated with managing change in the context of personnel management and development.

Syllabus

Topics covered include: The emergence and evolution of personnel and human resource management; The key functions of people management: recruitment and selection , performance management, training and development and employee participation; The context of people management: new organisational forms and the nature of contemporary work and workers; Strategic HRM and linking HRM to organisational performance; The HR profession and the process of organisational change.
