Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to: distinguish different sources and categories of law; understand and explain key legal concepts; understand and explain the essential features of the general law of contract; identify terms implied into contracts of employment; locate, understand and analyse key statutory provisions and case law; apply relevant law to a set of facts and draw conclusions about the legal implications for management; and conceptualise the broad scheme of the law in the areas covered by the course.

Syllabus

The course is designed to provide an understanding of both individual and collective employment law; It is organised so that if follows the sequence of the employment relationship. That is, after an introduction to the contract of employment and classification of the employment relationship it deals with the recruitment and selection, with terms and conditions of employment and the statutory floor of employment protection rights and with questions of termination; The course covers discrimination law including sex, race and disability discrimination and equal pay; It deals with the system of employment tribunals and with the law relating to trades unions. An important feature of the course is the integration of EU law throughout.

Private study
