Pre-requisite qualifications
Normally A level Music or a pass in ABRSM Grade 8 theory and a practical subject.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should have gained a grounding in the basic elements of music theory and compositional method, through the study of harmony and counterpoint. They should be familiar with and understand the terminology associated with these disciplines. This module aims to help students prepare for the analysis modules at levels 2 and , and to support aural, historical and compositional studies.Syllabus
An examination of the basic elements of musical theory and compositional method through the study of harmony and counterpoint. The module will cover the terminology associated with these disciplines, and support aural, historical and compositional studies. Typical syllabus elements will include: modes, keys and scales; an introduction to four-part harmony; species counterpoint in two parts; figured bass, chromatic chords and suspensions; and eighteenth- and twentieth- century compositional methods.
