Objectives

On successful completion of this module, students will be better able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the inter-cultural origins and development of major popular musical styles that emerged in the twentieth century;
- demonstrate an understanding of the full complexities of the idea of the popular and the shifting and contested meanings of the terms in which discussions about the subject are conducted;
- demonstrate an understanding of the ideas of genre as applied to popular music both in musicological and cultural terms;
- explore connections and links between oral traditions of music making, musical literacy, technology and changes in popular music styles;
- formulate and express convincing arguments cogently in written and verbal form; work independently and in small groups towards defined goals.

Syllabus

This module will be delivered through a series of lectures and seminal-workshops. These will deal with origins and developments of major popular musical styles that emerged in the twentieth century through the synthesis of African and European musical elements on the American continent. It will explore the full complexities of the idea of the popular and the shifting and contested meanings of the terms in which discussions about the subject are conducted. The module will explore the idea of genre as it is applied to popular music both in musicology and cultural terms. Links between oral traditions of music making, musical literacy, technology and changes in popular music styles will be made.
