Objectives
On the successful completion of the module, students will be able to:- critically apply forms of socio-cultural and historical analysis to different genres of popular and world musics;
- critically analyse and discuss examples of popular and world musics from different musicological and ethnomusicological perspectives;
- articulate and apply key concepts from a range of different perspectives, understanding differences between different intellectual traditions of investigation and study;
- draw connections and forge links between each element of the module and with concurrent and previous studies;
- discuss a wider range of musical styles;
- use primary and secondary sources in a critical and appropriate way.
Syllabus
This module will be delivered through a series of lectures and seminar-workshops. Students will study and apply different forms of analysis to examples of popular and world musics. Perspectives to be considered will include forms of socio-cultural and historical analysis and methods drawn from musicology and ethnomusicology.
Students will explore the values and limitations of the different approaches considered and will apply their developing skills to different musical texts.
