Pre-requisite qualifications

Normally a merit in ABRSM Grade 8 or satisfactory performance in MUSI1320 Practical Skills or MUSI1311 Performance A/MUSI1312 Performance B.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have gained experience in practical music-making through participation in recognised ensembles. Common objectives are to develop stylistic awareness and ensemble-playing skills, and to stimulate the imagination by interactive learning. Students' self- and peer-assessment skills should show signs of development , and they should demonstrate reliability and growing professionalism in their conduct as a performing musician. They should be able to reflect meaningfully on ensemble performance experiences and present this in an articulate manner.

Syllabus

This varies from semester to semester and from student to student. Common categories of activity are: orchestral project, choral project, brass project, wind project and new music ensemble. However projects are designed to reflect the competencies and orientations of the current cohort of student and do respond to areas of concern in the department's academic teaching and research. In addition, there may be the possibility for more advanced students (most appropriately those at level 3) to undertake smaller scale chamber/group activity as part of an agreed package of project activity. The nature of an individual's commitment in projects is negotiated with the module co-ordinator and ensemble directors with clear mechanisms for statement of intent, monitoring of progress and reflective review (incorporating elements of self- and peer- assessment).
