Objectives

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to: Carry out a close reading of a philosophical or critical text (on music), identifying and summarising the author's main points and arguments; contextualise those arguments both in terms of the emerging body of philosophical and critical ideas on music, and the immediate sociocultural circumstances of the author; evaluate those arguments, and the manner in which they are expressed, in the light of the author's evolving critical agenda. Trace the development of particular themes over time, from author to author; articulate, discuss and support these findings coherently in both written and verbal form; work effectively both independently and in groups towards clearly delineated goals

Syllabus

In a series of staff- and student-led seminars, students are introduced to influential and/or significant texts in the history of ideas about music in western civilisation. The module covers a range of texts, both critical and philosophical, providing an overview of the development of ideas about music, its special characteristics, social functions, and relations with the other arts. Texts are drawn from ancient Greek writings, from the medieval period, the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Enlightenment, and the German Romantic tradition. Authors selected for discussion might therefore typically include: Plato, Aristotle, Boethius, Tinctoris, Castiglione, North, Morley, Rameau, Quantz, Rousseau, Burney, Gretry, Crotch, Kant, Wackenroder, Hoffman, Schopenhauer, Hegel, Schumann, Hanslick, Wagner, Nietzsche, and Darwin.
