Objectives
On completion of this module, students should have an understanding of the principles of analogue and digital recording, microphone techniques, digital synthesis, MIDI, sequencing and audio digital signal processing. Students will be able o demonstrate technical competence in the areas listed above. Domain-specific skills will include: The ability to produce high-quality digital and analogue recordings of the voice, instruments and ensembles; The ability to manipulate and control digital synthesis hardware and software; the mastery of digital and analogue sound mixing; Competence in the use of MIDI sequencing software; The ability to process sounds with a variety of digital signal processing techniques. Generic and transferable skills will include: Competence in C⁢ Understanding and using non-musical technical language; Standard academic research skills; Time management; Organisational and communication skillsSyllabus
The module will cover the following areas: the MIDI protocol and associated software (especially sequencing); analogue and digital sound recording; methods of sound synthesis. It will also provide a detailed introduction to the techniques of digital signal processing as applicable to music. The module will include extensive practical studio project work.
