Objectives
This module aims to present critical analyses of 19th and early 20th century symphonic music through the study of selected models and discussion of theoretical and methodological approaches. Students should learn to balance formal and critical observation by the use of written prose supported by suitable tables and diagrams.Syllabus
Symphonic techniques and forms in the orchestral music (including explicitly programmatic works) of composers such as Beethoven, Berlioz, Wagner, Brahms, Mahler, Elgar, Debussy, Vaughan Williams and Bartok.
