Module summary

This module focuses on a number of examples of influential and controversial research in music psychology, it will help you to evaluate and criticise such work, and relate such work to real-world concerns.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:

- assess the importance of music-psychological research for understanding human behaviour;
- place selected exemplars of music-psychological research within a broad context of everyday concerns;
- develop more comprehensive skills in locating, summarising and reviewing existing primary source material;
- manage an independent project applying these skills; and
- demonstrate a broad knowledge of the methods and findings of music-psychological research.

Syllabus

The lectures will aim to provide students with advanced knowledge regarding some of the key issues in music psychology and develop their ability to carry out independent critical studies of existing literature. The majority of the lecture-seminars will focus on examples of influential and controversial research in music psychology, stretching students' critical faculties and introducing them to new concerns; other sessions will develop critical and evaluative skills.
