Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed knowledge of central historical
and contemporary issues in aesthetics and the philosophy of art;
- Deploy capacities for critical explication and presentation of arguments;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and
sustaining of an argument;
- describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the discipline;
- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources.

Syllabus

The course will examine the views of both historical figures, such as Aristotle, Kant or Hume, and contemporary authors with respect to central issues in aesthetics and the philosophy of art such as the nature of artistic value, aesthetic experience, beauty, artistic evaluation and the objectivity of taste. The consideration of historical views on such matters will feed into the detailed consideration of contemporary debates focusing on matters such as the nature of distinct genres, kinds or forms of art, the kind of knowledge art may yield or the inter-relationships between the moral and artistic character of artworks. The course does not presume any formal study of the arts or knowledge concerning a particular art form. However, it will obviously help to have an informed and lively interest in art, whether it be literature, film, painting or music. You will be encouraged to analyse and compare, critically, key ideas and to develop your own thoughts on the topics discussed.
