Objectives

To introduce students to politics and government in independent India, to explore the problems of political democracy in an agrarian society with profound social problems and marked political inequalities, and to develop an awareness of theoretical and conceptual approaches appropriate to non-western societies.

Syllabus

Political democracy in a non-industrial society; the legacy of history; Indian nationalism as a response to modernisation; democracy and secularism in an agrarian society; caste, class and political power; the politics of state-led development; clientelism and corruption; the decline of Congress; the 'revolt of the rich'; attempts at liberalisation; the revival of communal politics; instability and the integrity of the state; legitimacy and the future of secularism.
