Module summary

This module considers modern writings on strategy by theorists and practitioners and evaluates their usefulness both as guides to conduct and as research programmes. It examines the legacy of Clausewitz and Jomini; the challenge of du Picq and the Pacifists; the theories of Liddell Hart, Fuller, Sokolovskii, Wylie, Schelling, Collins, Boulding, Luttwak, Mao, Guevara and Summers. It considers the contemporary debates on security and contemporary military doctrinal writingsFor further information see the School of Politics and International Studies website. Objectives

To compare, contrast and evaluate the classic texts of strategic studies.

Syllabus

The legacy of Clausewitz and Jomini, the challenge of Du Picq and pacifists; Liddell Hart, Sokolovski, Wylie, Schelling, Luttwak, Summers, the move from strategy to security studies, Booth and Buzan, strategy in contemporary military doctrines.
