Module summary

This module introduces students to debates around race within Hollywood cinema. It introduces students to the specific debates within different genres of film and different thematic concerns within film. This provides students with a foundation from which they can go onto examine in more detail race within different Hollywood films. The module will introduce students to a variety of critical debates around race and Hollywood cinema and the changes and the challenges within different films.

Objectives

- To explore and debate issues of 'race' within Hollywood cinema.
- To enable participants to understand key theoretical concepts around race and evaluate these in relationship to Hollywood films.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- understand conceptual issues of 'race' as applied to Hollywood cinema
- critically analyse conceptual debates and issues of 'race' in relation to Hollywood cinema
- understand the critical debates around masculinity, feminity and 'race' within Hollywood films
- understand the critical debates surrounding 'race' and ethnicity
- review and critically appraise writing on 'race' and Hollywood cinema
- synthesise information and knowledge from a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives on 'race' and Hollywood cinema
- use the above to produce a critical essay and sit an examination which addresses key arguments and debates within the field of Race and Hollywood cinema.


Syllabus

This module introduces students to debates around 'race' and Hollywood cinema in a range of filmic genres.

This provides students with an advanced level foundation from which they can go onto examine race and representation in film. The module will introduce students to a variety of critical debates around 'race' and Hollywood cinema and the challenges posed when analysing films.

Week 11 - Examination Guidelines (PB).
