Module summary

This module aims to introduce you to major topics and areas of debate in the sociology of gender. This will be achieved through the study of feminist theory and theories of gender as well as some empirical material. The particular focus will be on gender in contemporary industrial societies although to develop an understanding of contemporary gender issues references to historical contexts and development are made at times. By the end of the module you should have acquired a broad map of current thinking in the sociology of gender as well as an understanding of key theoretical debates. The module will explore the empirical and theoretical interconnections between gender, sexuality, 'race' and class, whilst also considering explanations of sexual difference, gendered parenthood and the family, debates relating to work as well as sessions on technology and the body.Contact: Sally Hines s.hines@leeds.ac.uk or undergradsociologysocialpolicy@leeds.ac.uk
